Nicola Fallowfield-Smith (MEng CEng) is the business manager for the Worldwide Marketing Intelligence (WMI) team as BSRIA. She graduated from The University of Reading in 2008, with a first class master’s degree in mechanical engineering and spent two years working in the oil and gas industry as a mechanical engineer, specifying pressure vessels, pumps (rotating equipment), and packaged equipment for hydrocarbon processing plants.

In 2010, she became an expert witness, working in the insurance and legal industries and investigating the root causes of engineering and mechanical failures. Nicola specialised in hydronic and electrical systems, materials, and mechanical equipment (in residential and commercial applications). She acted as an expert witness for 12 years, in civil claims with losses ranging from £5,000 to £10 million, providing unbiased and objective technical advice to assist both legal teams and the Courts, in understanding complex engineering problems.

Nicola is a Chartered Engineer and has guest lectured at UCL for four years on engineering design and failure investigation. She joined BSRIA in April 2022, and now leads the WMI team, overseeing global market research and intelligence projects across a wide range of equipment including HVAC, cabling, and smart technologies.
